The Robertses' father was interested in theater from a young age. When he was studying at Emory University, he performed in several productions in Atlanta. When he was stationed in Biloxi, Mississippi, he was commissioned into the air force in 1953. Betty Lou Bredemus was in that production as well. Both married in 2005 and welcomed their first child, Eric Anthony in 1956. Walter went to Tulane University at New Orleans, Louisiana in 1957 after the couple had left the Air Force of the United States. Walter worked with Atlanta Academy Theater and Harrington Scenic and Lighting Studio. In 1960, the family moved in Decatur Georgia. The year 1964 was when Walter as well as Betty Lou began production on a local children's Saturday morning television show named Bum Bum and His Buddies that they funded on their own. In 1964 Walter and Betty Lou established their own organization called the Actors and Writers Workshop. It lasted for 6 years. During this time they also had two youngsters Lelisa (called Lisa) Billingsley in the year 1965 as well as Julia (called Julie) in 1967.
